greywater adalah sisa air pembuangan yang biasa berasal dari air bekas cucian, mandi atau cuci piring. Sedangkan Blackwater adalah air bekas pembuangan yang ada di toilet.
Pada prinsipnya, Greywater System sangatlah sederhana dan tidak butuh biaya besar tetapi akan menjadi besar bila anda akan mengubah sistim pipa yang sudah ada menjadi sistim ini (harus bongkar rumah).
Sistim Greywater ini memerlukan sistim pembuangan yang terpisah antara greywater dengan blackwater dimana nantinya air bekas cucian dan lainnya akan masuk ke pipa pembuangan air khusus yang kemudian akan ditampung di sebuah bak penampungan yang biasanya dilengkapi dengan filter untuk membersihkan air buangan tersebut.
Setelah air bekas tersebut menjadi bersih atau setidaknya tidak berbahaya maka air akan digunakan kembali untuk keperluan lain seperti mencuci mobil, menyiram tanaman sampai air untuk toilet.
Menurut data, setidaknya 50-80% air yang kita buang adalah air yang berasal dari cucian (pakaian dan piring) dan mandi jadi bila semuanya itu bisa kita gunakan kembali, pasti lebih hemat bayar PAM.
